THE MEANING OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

The origins of March 8th International Women’s Day trace back to the early 1900s, a time of great social and political change. The first National Women’s Day was observed in the United States in 1909, initiated by the Socialist Party of America to honor garment workers striking for better wages and working conditions. 

In 1910, at the International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen, the idea of an annual Women’s Day was proposed, leading to the first official celebrations in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland in 1911. Over the decades, the movement gained momentum, with March 8th becoming the recognized date for advocating women’s rights and gender equality. The United Nations officially declared March 8th as International Women’s Day in 1977, solidifying its place as a global day of recognition and action.
